BOOTS OFF MONDAY – Garden Jewels

G’day everyone,

Here are the top 5 highlights from my garden this past week!

  1. It has been 3 weeks since I potted up my Cucurbita maxima, worlds largest pumpkin’s into 10cm pots. They have now rooted through the pots and are ready for planting. Due to the lack of room in the vegetable garden and the amount of space required for these pumpkins to grow I have decided to plant them elsewhere. Over the weekend the back paddock was prepared. This year I am planning to fertilize every 2-4 weeks and lay mulch down to help keep the soil moist over the summer. Lets see how big we can get these pumpkins to grow!

2. Throughout this time of year the best time to capture photos of the garden is late afternoon as the sun is starting to set. The colours reflected back through the lens of the camera is stunning. This Srelitzia reginae is a great example of how the afternoon light brings out the jewel tones in the foliage and flowers.

3. This mother bird was not impressed when I walked into the garden shed to gather some fertiliser. It may be a few weeks until I can enter the shed without being chased out. I am looking forward to seeing the eggs hatch!

4. There are lots of new colours and forms of geraniums that have started to emerge in the last 12 months. One of the newer varieties that I have fallen in love with is Cranberry Sizzle. The hot pink blooms reach a diameter of 5-6 inches and will continue to repeat blooming in spring, summer and autumn.

5. Back at the start of winter we cut the Canna Lilies down to ground level and thinned out the clumps because they were starting to take over the gardenbed. After some tough love they have finally started to re-emerge. It wont be until after Christmas that they may produce some flowers.
