BOOTS OFF MONDAY – The Race To Growing The Largest Pumpkin!

G’day everyone,

Here are the top 5 highlights from my garden this past week!

1. The seeds of the Cucurbita maximaotherwise known as the ‘worlds largest pumpkin’, sprouted a few weeks back and it was only this past weekend that I got them potted up into 12cm pots. It is becoming a tradition of mine that I sow the seeds a little late in the season. But not to worry, once the white roots have reached the bottom of their new pots they will then be planted out into the garden.

2. Plants are always fascinating in the way they form, flower and develop over time, and this hybrid tea rose is no exception. Instead ofproducing the normal amount of flower buds on its stem (one bud)  it has produced four flower buds at once in the one spot. What is the meaning behind this? Well it is a mutation in the growth. In this case the rose bush is not suffering from disease or a virus infection, it is a great example of when plants do unusual things.

3. Three weeks ago the vegetable patch had a spring make over and was completely ripped apart. All the old winter vegetables and over grown herbs were pulled out and the soil turned over with compost to make it ready for the new seasons plants. Planted was a mixture of different lettuces and tomatoes. Pictured is the result oftwo feeds with Organic Fertilizer by Grow Better and 3 weeks of warm weather. It is amazing how quick the plants are growing!

4. This petite fruit of the alpine strawberry may look small but it packs a lot of flavour. It is insanely sweet and this is the biggest the fruit will ever get!

5. It is all about roses in the garden at this time of year. They are all looking fantastic and flourishing with spring flowers and growth! Pictured is the blue flowers of the ‘Blue for You’ rose. This rose has great repeat flowering and a pleasantly sweet fragrance.
